JV Dawgs 8-JV Islanders 6

Battle In The Cage!

Defenses and Special Teams took care of all but two points in this week's tilt.  The Islanders opened up with a 55 yard interception touchdown in the first quarter and took the 6-0 lead into the half.  Barsby responded with an electrifying 75 Yard Johnson Nguyen kick-off return to open the second half.  The score was capped off with a three yard run by Justis MacKay-Topley to make the score 8-6 for good.

Barsby defense and special teams were superb.  Offensively, we still struggled by were definitely playing better than we were in week 1.  We will enter practice looking to clean-up our ball handling, penalties and definitely to improve upon our team blocking.

Next-Up are our Arch Rivals, The Ballenas Whalers, Wednesday at 3:01 PM in The Cage.

Go Dawgs!

Friday's Kick-Off is 1:30 PM at William Griffin Park, North Vancouver

Our Varsity Dawgs travel to play the Argyle Pipers of North Vancouver this Friday.  The game will represent our first league contest as we battle for playoff contention in November.  Argyle and Barsby have had a series of increasingly close games over the past two years including last year's epic come from behind JV win at Merle Logan in the BC Quarter-Final game vs the Pipers.  Memories are fresh and this promises to be a lights out battle at the Varsity level!

Varsity Dawgs 61 GW Graham 0

Dawgs Rebound Big!

Our Varsity squad rebounded from a tough loss last week with a total team effort vs GW Graham.  The defense was stellar posting five interceptions and a fumble recovery.  One interception wound up being a 90 yard scoring play as was the fumble recovery in our opponent's end zone.  Offensively, we put up 496 yards via the air and ground.

A big shout out to our wounded warrior Trentyn Anderson!  We love ya lots and are going to be with you all the way to your return to the field in a few weeks!

Go Dawgs!

JV's Scrap It Up!

Humans fight, gal dang that is a historical fact.  We fight because we are passionate and if another being is passionate about what we want, we get gal dang competitive.  We are what we are.

Valleyview taught us how to compete, within the rules, no excuses required.  Without them, we could not find our best selves.  Thanks guys for the Game!  Awesome Stuff!!

Now it is evidenced that we lost, but hec, we had the good luck today to be around one another and learn lots about getting better! The scoreboard said we lost 20-0 but I think we, coaches included, got to see a way forward from our present state. Excited as hec about getting better next practice!!!

Our Varsity Dawgs travel this Friday, 13 September to Chilliwack to play the GW Graham Grizzlies.  Graham is coming off of a close loss to AAA Kelowna this past weekend and this will be their first Varsity home game of the season.  We are playing on their school field and the crowd is going to be fearsome in terms of size and enthusiasm.  The day is going to start mighty early for us and we again travel.  Learning to play while tired and under stress is a good thing however because when the big games of November roll around we are going to know that we have been there before!

Our JV squad kicks-off its season this Thursday at 3:40 PM vs the Valleyview Vikings of Kamloops!  Players and coaches are hyper-excited for this game as it has been a long wait to start playing some ball!

Valleyview will roll in with a large roster in terms of numbers and some big, tough players.  Our Dawgs will surely have their work cut-out for them as they host the "Football Aristocracy" of greater Kamloops.

We are looking for a huge turnout in support of our young fellas come Thursday!  Wear Red and always remember to cheer for our team and not against our visitors.  Without Valleyview, we would not have a game and a way to find the best from within ourselves!

But in defeating the enemy

Spring Ball Finishes Strong!

Teams Play Big At Spring Jamboree

Spring Ball concluded with a Varsity Jamboree on Friday and JV Jamboree on Saturday.  Lots of hard work went into these two games in terms of player and coaching preparation.  The results were on balance, highly positive.  There is always room to "Get Better" but, a solid foundation has been laid headed into Summer Weight-Room and sweat sessions on the field with Nanaimo's favorite tire farm!

A big thanks you to all the parent and coaching volunteers who helped with the field lining, set-up and take down!  A huge applause to the parents, students, teachers, school administrators and friends of the program who were on hand to cheer the fellas on!

Big Weekend For Camps Upcoming!

And So It Begins!

The April 27-28th weekend is going to be a big one for football in the City of Nanaimo.  The Football Spring Frenzy at John Barsby HS will feature over a hundred players grades 6-11 from across Vancouver Island, particularly Barsby, Nanaimo District and Ballenas out on the field going through their paces and adding to their collective toolkits prior to hitting the local gridiron practice fields for spring ball.  Frenzy is a great way to get better together from a regional player and coaching persepective before things get really competitive this Fall.  Ball is back and we are all really excited.

Barsby grade 12's will join a strong contingent of JB alumni at the VI Raider spring camp this weekend as well on Merle Logan Field.    We have a great relationship with the Raiders and are excited as hec for our fellas as they move on to the journey and quest to bring another National Championship home to Nanaimo.

It is also great to see the coming together of so many great Island HS players who arrive as former rivals to help build a Raider squad we can all be proud of as they represent "The Rock" against all comers this Summer and Fall!

Best of Luck To All This Weekend!!

UBC Camp A Hit!

Gettin Better With The UBC Thunderbirds!

The UBC development camp held on April 21st at the Barsby Campus was a big success.  Sixty-four campers got better on the afternoon with Barsby fielding a very large contingent on the field.  We will be partnering with the Thunderbirds again in April 2014 and wish Coach O and his staff the best of luck in their 2013 CIS season!

Seats at the banquet are $20.00 per-person and can be purchased at the school front office.   Please purchase your ticket before Friday, 30 November.

Varsity Season Comes To An End

South Delta Sundevils 27 Varsity Dawgs 12

It was a game where we led for over a half and had our chances to capitalize on great defense and special teams, but ultimately fell short. I alone am responsible for that. There are no fingers to point. The players gave their all, period.

In the big games, great opponents will make you pay for anything less than perfection and this was the case on Saturday at UBC. There was no quit in our guys and all played with passion and desire. No regrets, twas not our day. There was much to be proud of when the final whistle blew.

From here, we all go on to "get better".  One football game does not define who we are as people.  How we respond, how we "bounce" and move forward does in it's way, define us.  The players who participated in this one are winners for even being there!  Our graduating grade 12's have since their freshmen year, played in two BC Semi-Final Games and two BC Championship Games.  Pretty darn impressive when you consider the fact that the vast majority of their gridiron peers across the province do not get to play in even one such meaningful game during their HS career.   The body of work our squad has put forth this year and in year's past is inspiring and I believe a foundation for life success in the years to come.

Returning players have some big choices to make as to how they are going to approach the coming 2013 season.  Nothing will be handed to you and everything will be earned.  When it comes down to crunch-time on the field, against a quality opponnent, there will be no lies.  You either out-prepared the men across from you or you did not.  Football is an honest game.  Ask the grade 12's how fast it all goes by and how precious every moment you have playing for the Dawgs is.  You will know what to do.

To all who have supported our squad and program this year:

An Immense Thank You!  My appreciation and gratitude are marrow deep.

All Love,

Coach

JV's Lose Tough BC Semi-Final

Mission 19-Barsby 16

In many ways this game was a microcosm of the 2012 JV Season.  We started slow in the first half getting down 13-0 at the break.  An early third quarter Roadrunner punt return widened the gap to 19-0 and then all hec broke loose.  Our JV's responded with a very physical drive along the ground to the end-zone and capped it off with a 2 pt. conversion.  The ensuing short kick was unsuccessful and Mission began with great field position.  Our defense responded by knocking them back to fourth and long and we got the ball back deep in our end of the field.  We drove to mid-field and then qb North Rainey threw a literal bomb just over 40 yards to Cole Smith deep over the middle for the second Barsby score.  Trentyn Anderson pounded the ball in for a 2 pt. conversion and it was 19-6.  The rest of the game was back and forth contest with each team forcing a turnover and having its chances for another score.  The tide was turning in our favor and we simply ran out of time.   Another great Barsby-Mission tilt, hard fought and cleanly played!

The 2012 Barsby JV's have been an inspiration, particularly your faith and resilience in the face of on-field adversity.  This will stand you in good stead when your gridiron days are a pleasant memory of your youth.  What a fine group of young men!  You bring honor to the game and your futures are bright!

Go Dawgs!
