2010 Border Battle

John Barsby Varsity 56 Ballenas 25

A fun, action packed afternoon up at Ballenas HS in Parksville.  The Whalers put on a great show and had their whole school out to the game!  Our opponents game planned well and came out giving their all and did not let up for four quarters.  We brought our best as well and what transpired was big play after big play on both sides of the ball for both teams.  The Whalers kept it close for three quarters but our relentless team effort was just too much for em.

Collectors Edition Border Battle T's For Sale!

*Note: T-Shirt on the left of above image is the one being sold.

The Border Battle is our biggest rivalry game of the year each season and you could feel it all week and especially when their crowd took to the field all decked out in Whaler colours and garb.  We have printed special T-Shirts to commemorate the game and rivalry that will be on sale while supplies last.  Each shirt will be sold for $20.00 with proceeds going to equipment costs for the year.  The JV edition of the Border Battle will be played on Wednesday, November 3rd at 3:00 PM in The Canem Cage!

2010 Border Battle!

Strap on your Headgear, fill-up the ice bags and get ready for some old school high school rivalry football!  The 2010 edition of Vancouver Island's biggest High School Football Rivalry Game is going to take place on Friday, October 8th at 2:01 PM on the Ballenas High School Field!

The host Whalers are 3-1 on the young season and are really hitting their offensive and defensive strides!  The Whalers dominated time of possession last week en-route to a 32-12 victory over the Hugh Boyd Trojans of Richmond.  Ballenas vicitimized Boyd with three on-side kick-off recoveries and an interception that all produced Whaler scores.  The Whaler defense was at its physical best dominating the line of scrimmage and allowing many gang tackles by their linebacker and defensive back corps.  Offensively, the Whalers scored by land and by air with a variety of formations, passes, direct and misdirection runs.  In short, they were comprehensive and they were good.

The Barsby Varsity squad is going to have to bring its game to a new level when we step on to Whaler grass come Friday!  There will be no room for mistakes and all should remember that previous stats and points are not worth a single yard, tackle or score in this game!  How we practice this week and how we prepare mentally will be the biggest indicator of success or defeat on Friday.  The Barsby coaching staff feels that this will be a real litmus test for the Varsity in terms of where we are and where we are headed.  Ballenas will give no quarter and we will ask for none.  Lets get better this week!

JV Dawgs Week 4

JV's Improve!

Congratulations to our JV squad on their 22-0 victory over AAA Lord Tweedsmuir of Surrey.  We came out of the gates physical and never looked back.  To go along with the play of the D, O, and Pride and Joy Units, there was a great pace set that carried us forward through the late quarters.  The coaching staff was very proud of how the offense responded to some late 2nd quarter adversity on Wed.  As well, the team travelled great and our behavior start-to-finish was superb.

A big thank you to Coach Biggen and his staff/program/school for their first rate hospitality.  We very much enjoyed the experience!

The remainder of this week for our JV's is as follows:

Week 4 Varsity League Opener

The South Delta Sundevils Are Coming To Town!

An outstanding South Delta varsity squad will arrive Thursday night, rest-up and be on the field for our league opener at 1:46 PM, Friday, 1 October in The Canem Cage.  This game is huge, with playoff implications for both teams right out of the gates.

The Scout:

  • South Delta is big and physical up-front on both sides of the ball.
  • South Delta has a terrific passing game with well timed routes, superb receivers and the ability to read coverage and audible effectively.
  • Quarterback has a next level arm and touch on the ball!
  • South Delta runs multiple offensive formations looking for mismatches.
  • Run game is quick-hitting!
  • These guys love to run trick-plays and are very effective at doing so!!
  • Defensively, a very fast group to the ball!  Defensive Line is well coached and disciplined.
  • Special Teams: They are well coached and employ just about every trick in the book.  Swinging gate on PAT/Field Goal creates multiple threats to score!
Our Varsity Squad will have to play to our fullest potential in order to compete with South Delta.  They were banged up in their last game and now have their atletes back along with two solid weeks of preparation.  Expect anything and bring everything fellas!

WE NEED CROWD HELP!  Calling out to all alumni and Dawg Supporters, we thrive on the noise and feel like there is an extra player on the field with us when you start rocking The Cage!

Go Dawgs!!

2010 Ray Kocher Classic

Two games played this week vs our neighborhood rival Nanaimo District HS were lights out fun.  Our JV squad really found its stride turning in a solid performance en-route to a 35-22 victory on Thursday.  The game was very, very physical and NDSS asked for and gave no quarter throughout.  The coaching staff has been very impressed with the intensity and level of preparation from the whole team.  The players have done an excellent job of assisting and pushing one another to improve.  A job well done!

At the Varsity level we continued to roll with a 50-6 victory.  The competition has been getting stronger however and we were stopped on downs for the first time since play began at the spring Jamboree.  Another big effort by our defense led to five recovered fumbles!  Pride and Joy units were outstanding again.  Next up for our Varsity is our first league game Friday, October 1st, 1:45 PM versus the South Delta SunDevils.

Next-up for our JV squad is a renewal of our program's rivalry with the AAA Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers of Surrey this coming Wednesday.  A travel itinerary will be posted.

Both our JV and Varsity will be practicing on Monday, 27 Sept (Pro-D-Day)  from 3-5:30 PM.

Week Four: Divisional Play Begins!

A Message To Our Varsity

Guys,  high school football comes and goes so quickly and there are 13 weeks of ball in a season.  We are entering week four and the beginning of our divisional schedule.  You have prepared well for what is coming down the pipes!  From here on out, every game is for making the playoffs and then to move forward.  We set our dream goal in the heat of August; each week we have laboured to improve.  The process must continue.

Below is a video that defines the intensity we must bring to every practice and game from here on out.  Watch it daily.  When you are weary, watch it.  When you catch yourself feeling complacent, watch it.  When you need a push, watch it.  Soak it in, personalize your "Last Play" effort.  Bring your best.  The alternative is regret, the most expensive thing in the world.

Last Play Dawgs!  Last Play!

Ray Kocher Classic Game Week!

The tenth annual Ray Kocher Classic Rivalry Game between the John Barsby and Nanaimo District H.S. Football programs is slated for this week. The game and trophy get their name in honor of Mr. Ray Kocher who was the principal of both schools at the time that they respectively started their programs. Mr. Kocher’s unwavering support and encouragement are the reason that hundreds upon hundreds of young men over the years have had the opportunity to compete on the gridiron and measure themselves against their peers from across the province.

The John Barsby Junior Varsity Squad will travel to NDSS Thursday afternoon for a 3:16 PM kick-off and Friday afternoon, the Varsity Dawgs host the Islanders in the Canem Cage at 1:46 PM. These games are always extremely hard fought regardless of either team’s win-loss record and it is a source of school pride throughout the year.

The Varsity edition of this year’s duo of games will feature the John Barsby Dance Squad performing at half-time for our home and visiting fans. Lots of hard-fought fun this week! In the spirit of the game and fraternity of the two football programs: Go Dawgs! Go Islanders! Lets Get It On!!

Week 2 Wrap-UP

In-Review

JV 32-Belmont 20

Hi-lite of the week: JV study hall!!  Twenty-six players attended study-hall on Thursday beginning at 3:06 and with the last player leaving shortly after 5 PM.  Four school staff members volunteered their help during this period with specialties represented from the Math, Science, English, Social Studies and Computer Science departments!  Wow!!  Those going the extra-mile were rewarded with some great tasting pizza at the end of the session!  How we study and how we play are two peas in a pod; well done JV Dawgs!!!

JV Pride and Joy!!

After a slow start at this Monday's practice, our JV worked hard to improve during subsequent sessions.  Friday's game at Belmont went a long ways towards telling us where we are at.  Defensively, we played physical and sharp producing a score en route.  Pride and Joy special teams units were outstanding and produced a touchdown.  Offensively, our recivers showed much improvement.  We will be going to work on offensive line and quarterback play come Monday!  Everything is fixable with a "lets get better" attitude.

Varsity 58- Belmont 0

Pride and Joy Baby!

We did some growing in practice this week and were ready to play right out of the gates.  Our team defense gave a savage account of themselves producing turnovers and many negative yardage plays for the opposing offense.  Offensively, we started on a very short field all day long and were very efficient in terms of getting the ball across the goal-line with six different ball carriers contributing to the final score.  The offensive line played superb and gashed big holes in the opposing unit.  Pride and Joy special teams units had a monster day and was an inspiration/joy to behold.  In a word, Devastation!

Game video shows areas requiring improvement, but this does not lessen the fact that we improved this week as individuals and more importantly, as a team.

All, enjoy the win and as of 0001 hrs. Sat. 18th, it is Ray Kocher Classic Game Week vs Nanaimo District.  Time to go to work and get better!!

Week 1 Complete!

A Super Day For The Varsity Dawgs!

Dawg fans were treated to a very complete, intense and elevated effort on Saturday vs the Okanagen Mission Huskies of Kelowna.  The defense forced three turnovers and accounted for five sacks en-route to a physical, dominating performance.

Pride and Joy Units played their part giving us terrific field position most of the game and the offense struck quick, hard and often.
"Chain-Saw"
Video analysis shows much to work on however as we continue to go through the process of getting better each day, week and month.  We are looking forward to a great week of practice ahead beginning Monday with a program defensive emphasis practice.

JV Dawgs 16 Mt. Douglas 39

No Quit in our DNA!

Our JV Squad opened up their season Wednesday versus the 2009 Provincial Champion Mt. Douglas Rams of Victoria.  While we fell short on the scoreboard, we surely did not fall short on the character, attitude and effort board!  The game was very, very physical both ways and the coaching staff was encouraged by what the players brought to the field!  Sometimes you have to take a loss like this and treat it like a friend, look in the mirror real good, learn from it, and drive on with the mission!  We are going to get a whole bunch better folks and there are big, big things ahead for the 2010 JV Bulldogs!!

It is back to work on Friday morning with the Dawghouse open at 6:00 AM and players on the field at 06:30.  Time to lick our wounds and get focused on Belmont!

A big shout-out to the awesome crowd at the game!!  Parents, classmates, varsity, alumni, teachers and of course, our Harewood neighbors/friends!!  Another packed house in the Canem Cage.

Go Dawgs!

CTV News is pleased to announce that in September we will be introducing a new weekly sports segment. We call it High School Heroes, and it will celebrate school pride and the grassroots of football in our province.
Every Friday this fall, dozens of high schools from across B.C. will put their bragging rights on the line in a game of football. These intense battles on the gridiron not only unite the players in uniform, but they also bring together students, parents and fans in an ultimate show of school spirit.

High School Heroes will go beyond the players involved in the game. It will stretch into the hallways and classrooms of your school. A high school hero can be anyone, not just the star quarterback. It can be someone who has accomplished something great in the area of academics, a promising young musician or a student who gives back by volunteering.

Every Monday during the football season, the two teams involved in the upcoming High School Heroes Game of the Week will be announced live on CTV News at Six. Throughout the remainder of the week, CTV will be previewing the Friday night matchup with stories about the players and their schools.
The first High School Heroes Game of the Week will happen on Friday, Sept. 10. Sports Director Perry Solkowski will be live on location from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. counting down to kick-off with live interviews and feature stories.
Every Friday from Sept. 17 until the Championship finals in December, Solkowski or sportscaster Jason Pires will be reporting live from the Game of the Week school in the Lower Mainland or the Fraser Valley. You can also watch the Game of the Week highlights, features and all the scores on CTV News at 11:30. Weekly highlights, feature stories, a football insiders blog and photo galleries will also be available on the High School Heroes site.

We'll be offering fans the chance to get involved on a week-to-week basis with High School Heroes in three more ways:

Bulldogs' vicious bite sends Condors crashing

Walter Cordery, Daily News

Published: Tuesday, September 07, 2010

The John Barsby Bulldogs not only took a bite out of the Duchess Park Condors Saturday, they mauled the Prince George visitors 77-6 in front of about 200 fans surrounding the Canem Cage at John Barsby Secondary.
It was the opening game of the season for the Nanaimo team, ranked No. 6 in the British Columbia High School Football Association's list of AA teams.
The Dawgs defence, sparked by the inspiring performance of defensive tackle Zach Amstutz grounded the Condors aerial attack, forcing a number of turnovers. Amstutz was one of a number of Barsby players who played on both offence and defence.

Barsby didn't know what kind of game the team from PG would give them, as the Condors had a number of returning players on their roster. However, Barsby scored early and often taking a 58-6 lead into halftime.
That was not enough to comfort head coach Rob Stevenson.  He told his players at halftime that as far as he was concerned the second half was an entirely new ball game and "the score is 0-0."

Barsby QB Patrick Doyle avoided turnovers and was seen throwing a few blocks for massive running back Jordan Kuziek and others. Doyle also patrols the defence as a strong safety.  He connected on long throws for touchdowns to Nathan Berg and Tim Hampson but it was the Barsby offensive line that dominated the game, opening up gaping holes for any of the running backs Stevenson platooned into game. "I think our O-line is the strongest I've seen in at least 10 years," said Stevenson following the game. He was "pretty pleased" with the result. "For coming into this game after a full week of practices, I thought we played OK but not without a few mistakes, which we will get ironed out."

The varsity team's next opponent is the Okanagan Mission Huskies, who will be lining up against the Dawgs on Saturday at noon at John Barsby Secondary's newly christened Canem Cage.

The junior varsity Bulldogs drew hated rival and last year's No. 1-rated team Victoria's Mt. Douglas Rams as their first opponent of their season.  The kickoff for that encounter is set for 3 p.m. on Wednesday at Barsby.

Varsity Game Week!

The opening game of our 2010 Varsity Football Season takes place this Saturday, 10 AM in the Canem Cage versus the Dutchess Park Condors of Prince George, BC!  We are looking for a great turnout for the game and are excited about the opportunity to get the season started at home in front of our family and friends!

We are looking for volunteer help with the sticks, scoreboard, PA and video.  Please contact Coach Stevenson ASAP if you can provide an assist.

Scout:  Information regarding the Condors is very limited.  What we do know is that they return a lot of players from their 2009 squad, they are big up-front and they like to throw the football a lot from a spread type offensive scheme.  The visitors will be wearing their black and gold uniforms and JB will be decked out in our Whites.

Weather:  The long-term forcast has game day as being sunny with temperatures peaking at 22 c.

Four practices this week to get game ready!  Each practice has to be gold!!

JV and Varsity squads continued to make stellar progress on Wednesday.  Most of the special teams package is in and Thursday will see the remainder of insertion complete.  Week two will be about polish and personel packages.

Attendance and attitude on field remain strong and there have been pleasant surprises on both sides of the ball.  One more to go this week!

Pre-Season Practice #2 Recap

Yesterday afternoon JV and evening varsity practices were better than our opening sessions by every measure.  The JV's set the standard with 100% attendance and an effort/mental focus to match.  Our varsity followed on in the same form and our coaching staff was very pleased with the amount of ground we covered at both levels.  The fundamental/technical building blocks are beginning to be put in place that are going to allow for tactical success on future gamedays.  Once we gain a firm grasp on our fundamentals, we can employ them in very creative combinations down the road.

We continue to work on mental depth at every position and some cross-training is beginning to occur.  This will bode well in the tough weeks of October and November.  Two more practice days this week and then it is a well earned three days to let it all imprint and to get our bodies right for week two.

For now, here is a great video that says much of what is felt but sometimes unspoken.  Am starting to feel the season approach!

Pre-Season Practices

Practice #1

Pre-Season Practices have now begun.  Player practice effort and attitude was very good at both levels.  We all know what kind of shape we are in physically and that is one area that we are going to continue to work on with games just around the corner.  We will get better!

Insertion was outstanding and "Dawg Special Ops" our "Pride and Joy" units are going to look and play terrific!

Both squads have set their goals for the year and now the "process" of achieving them begins.  Working on technique, mental depth and tempo now become our focus.

As a coaching staff we are very, very excited to announce the addition/return of Coach Lyall Woznesensky to the program.  Lyall is a retired perennial CFL All-Pro Defensive Lineman who brings a wealth of experience and surfire intensity to the practice field.  He loves coaching and working with our young people.  We just got a hec of a lot better as a program!  In addition to Coach Woz, we welcome former John Barsby greats, now alumni Chris McCormick (Coach MC) to our JV Staff and Derek "Rudy" Garside to the Varsity staff as well!

Looking forward to subsequent practices this week with great optimism!  We are going to Get Better Each Day!

Field News

Our new scoreboard/sign will be up and ready to go in time for our Sat. September 4th 10 AM varsity season opener versus the Dutchess Park Condors of Prince George.

2010 Spring In Review

This past weekend saw our spring football session capped off with superb play at the 2010 JV and Varsity Jamborees.  A winter/spring of extremely hard work in the weight room combined with well attended and intense practice sessions paid off big when we got down to brass tacks against opposing squads during game situations at the jamborees.

2010 Varsity Dawgs

Our varsity squad scored on every possession throughout the day while repping two separate backfields and multiple offensive line combinations.  Defensively it was swarm the ball time and some molar rattling hitting throughout. The passion and enthusiasm that our defenders brought on to the field was an inspiration!! The hi-lite however, was the play of our offensive line.  It was special and the hard-work preceding the contest was very, very evident.  Across the roster, a stellar attitude, effort, focus and intensity!!!

2010 JV Dawgs

Our JV's brought a very, very physical style of play to the Jamboree.  Defensively we played swarming, gang-tackling ball and the plastic was audible in each game!  Defense surely set the tone for our JV Dawgs.  Offensively, we got a great look at various personel combinations in up-front, in the backfield and on the perimeter.  We scored by air and on land.  If there was an ocean, we'd of scored by sea too!  It was rewarding to see the focus and mutual support as the day wore on.  The special teams units we are going to be able to put together are going to be awesome!!  All systems are a go headed into the summer opportunity season.

A Big Thanks To This Year's Coaching Staff!!

All in all, Spring Ball has been a resounding success, morale is high and the hunger for improvement is equally so.  We are just under three short months from Fall Ball and we have to put this time to great use.  There is much to do at every level of the program to get better and hec, trying to get better is half the fun of this thing of ours!!

For now however, we are heading into final preparation for our year-end exams.  Being our best is a full-time thing, not a part-time hobby.  Academic success provides opportunity and a platform for choice later in life.  Lets get after those books with great fervor and tenacity!!

"You Get Better or You Get Worse, You Never Stay The Same!!"

Spring Jamboree Week 2010 (Dawgbites re-post)

DAWGBITES

John Barsby Football Newsletter

Jamboree Week is Upon Us!

This coming weekend marks the conclusion of a superb spring of preparation by all the players and coaches! The most admirable aspect of the journey has been the level of commitment and effort by all concerned!! It has been immensely gratifying to observe the weekly improvement that has taken place throughout. We have certainly lived up to our motto of "Try Your Hardest-Get Better Each Day and Do The Right Thing!" . The upcoming jamboree's will be a reward for all that has come before!

Some Folks may have a question as to what the Spring Jamborees are all about. Here is a primer:

Purpose: JB football uses the jamboree as an instrument to evaluate individual player technique; conditioning; unit schemes; player combinations; and individual/team character under live game conditions. It is a very important guage of how everybody functions from a player and staff point-of-view under the pressure of a live game environment.

As a program, we video-tape everything and then spend June breaking down what we see. In conjunction with the video, our coaching staff reviews their individual and collective observations of the event. In July/August we use this data to make specific and lasting adjustments to how we organize and implement individual and team preparation headed into Fall Ball.

Format: We play a series of 30 minute scrimmages on a half-field with no special-teams or kicking game. We simulate actual game conditions as closely as possible. A coach is allowed on the field with the players to ensure quality control and safety.

Jamboree Week Itinerary

Tuesday, 25 May: Final JV Practice. Player combinations and insertion are finalized. Game uniform issue will occur after practice. Practice uniforms collected for laundering and all game uniforms are to be kept in the Dawghouse. Injured players must obtain uniforms as well.

Wednesday, 26 May: Final Varsity Practice. Player combinations and insertion are finalized. Game uniform issue will occur after practice. Practice uniforms collected for laundering and all game uniforms are to be kept in the Dawghouse.

Thursday, 27 May: Individual, Team and Program Photograph Day for both Varsity and JV. We will begin photos at 3:16 PM. Injured players must participate in this event as well! This is our one shot deal for the hallway team photos that will be posted for 2010 and for player/team photos that will be sent home in mid-June. As well, the team photo sent to the BC Secondary School Football Association for playoff programs is also derived from this event. After we complete our photos, both squads will participate in team walk-throughs for the jamboree. Itineraries will be distributed after we are complete. Players may wear their jersey to school on Friday as it is a gameday tradition with the program.

Hump Week

The hardest week of Sprng Foootball is upon us.  Varsity practices continue to be run Monday, Wednesday and Friday after school and the JV's practice Tuesday, Thursday and Friday after school.  Both teams have taken tremendous strides forward in terms of development and mastery of their offensive and defensive schemes.  We are at the point now where serious cross-training on both sides of the ball is going to take place.  The mental depth we aquire will serve us all well on Jamboree day when things get rough and tumble!

Jamboree Week

Next week is jamboree week.  The week begins with everybody getting Monday (Victoria Day) off to lick their spring wounds and to spend time with family and friends.  Tuesday our JV's will conduct their final padded practice and Wednesday the Varsity will do the same.  Thursday we will  have uniform issue and program/team/individual photos.  Both teams will then conduct a walk through and receive final instructions re: their respective Jamborees.

Varsity Jamboree: Friday, May 28th 2-5:30 PM @ Nanaimo District HS

Junior Varsity Jamboree: Saturday, May 29th 11:00 AM-3:30 PM @ Nanaimo District HS.

VI Raiders Spring Camp 2010

Congratulations to the nine John Barsby Football Alumni who took part in this weekend's VI Raider Spring Camp!

Players in attendance were: Ryan Veale (WR), Mike Schaper (WR). Nick Woznesensky (DT), Stephen Allard (DE), Josh Nesvog (FB), Marshall Cook (WR), Ariel Fabbro (DB), Dylan Chapdelaine (LB) and Aaron Davies (DB).

It was also great to see NDSS and Ballenas alumni on the field.

The Raider program sure has matured over the years and the organization, tempo and professionalism are to be commended.  What is truly neat is how many of the players are using the VI Raideer-Van Isle University Tuition Credit program to such great advantage.   Quite frankly, this is a great step for young men making the transition from HS to University Ball and time spent with the Raiders is both productive in terms of skill development and wise in terms of advancing one's post-secondary training opportunities. When speaking to the players, one cannot help but to note how much they have matured in outlook and personal disposition/demeanor after time spent with the Raiders organization.   I really liked what I saw on and off of the field this weekend.

DAWGBITESJohn Barsby Football Newsletter
SR. Bowl 2010
A huge congratulations to the following John Barsby Grade 12 players who were selected to participate in the 2010 Sr. Bowl All-Star Camp in Vancouver this past Spring Break: Dylan Chapdelaine, Marshall Cook, Ariel Fabbro and Braeden Swatez. Our Dawgs represented their school and themselves very well across the week and this was a fine way to cap outstanding High School Football careers. Well done!
Equipment Issue
We are continuing the process of gearing up this year's JV and Varsity squads for the upcoming camp and May's Spring Football Practices. Equipment will be issued today (Tuesday, 13 April) at lunch and Wednesday (14 April) at lunch. It is important that all players who have not yet received their gear to ensure that they are present at these times as this week's time frame is very compressed.

7 on 7 Passing
Seven on Seven Passing will continue this week and the JV and Varsity groups will travel together via school bus on Friday to play @ Ballenas High School. The bus will leave at 2:20 PM and we ought to arrive back at the Dawghouse circa 6 PM. Varsity will play at 3:30 PM and JV's at 4:30 PM. This is a huge opportunity for our players to learn our offensive and defensive schemes while honing valuable individual skills. We will host the Whalers the following Friday, 23 April at the same times and will travel one last time on Friday 30 April using the same schedule as we will be using this Friday.

Football Spring Frenzy Camp
We will be hosting our 11th annual Football Spring Frenzy Development Camp this weekend. There will be coaches and players from across Vancouver Island along with former pro Lyall Woznesensky and some JB alumni who currently play with the VI Raiders. This camp is our signature kick-off event for the season and the skills obtained over the weekend are invaluable for all players. If your son has never played contact football before, he will emerge from this camp with a great head-start headed into May Spring Practices.

From a coaching perspective, this camp gives our staff a tremendous opportunity to evaluate this year's rosters in live contact situations. We are then able to factor in our evaluations into Spring Ball so as to be the most efficient and productive with our practice and teaching time.

On Saturday 17th, all players need to arrive at the Dawghouse with a 4 litre water bottle and get changed into their protective equipment. Jerseys will be issued to all players at this time. We will be on the bleachers at 0900 hrs. and camp introductions and an orientation will take place shortly thereafter. The morning practice will take place from 0930-11:30, we will provide lunch (players are expected to remain on campus) and will practice in the afternoon from 12:30-1430.

On Sunday 18th we will follow the same schedule with the afternoon session involving a 1/2 warm-up and camp scrimmage (lots of fun!).

Food Preparation Friday, 16 April @ 7:01 PM
Volunteers are needed for the food preparation for this weekend's camp. We will be meeting in the JB cafeteria at 7:01 PM to make 520 sandwiches for this year's campers. We really need help here and will set-up an assembly line to accomplish the task. Please e-mail Coach Stevenson if you can be of assistance boomsha@yahoo.com . Many hands make short-work!

Food service and Clean-Up
We need eight people to help lay out the pre-prepared food and tidy up after the lunch is finished. Volunteers would need to show up at 1030 and be on hand until 12:00 both days. Again, please e-mail Coach Stevenson if you can help.

Registration

We will need four people to help with registration and jersey issue at the gym entrance from 0815-0915 on Saturday, 17 April. Everything will be set-up and pre-prepared so the process in neither taxing or mind-bending. Again, if you can help, please contact Coach.

Spring Football Practices

The Spring Practice Schedule is posted on the right hand side of the John Barsby Football Blog-Site http://johnbarsbyfootball.blogspot.com/

It is very important that players take carefull note of the dates and times indicated. Attendance at these scheduled practices is mandatory. We are allowed by rule, 10 practices in gear prior to our Spring Jamboree. Every practice counts as team members depend on one another to have a mastery of assigned schemes and techniques.

Team and Individual Photos
Program, Team and Individual Photographs will take place Thursday May 27th from 3:15-5 PM. It is very important that everyone is present as there are no second chances with this event. Game uniforms will be issued.

Varsity Jamboree
The Varsity Jamboree will be held at Nanaimo District HS on Friday, 28 May from 2 PM to 5:30 PM. The team bus will depart from the Dawghouse at 12:45 PM and we will arrive back at the Dawghouse at 5:45 PM. There will be at least seven (7) teams in attendance).

Junior Varsity Jamboree
The Junior Varsity Jamboree will take place Saturday, 29 May at Nanaimo District HS and will run from 11:00 AM to 3 PM. The team bus will depart from the Dawghouse at 0950 AM and will arrive back at the Dawghouse at 3:15 PM. There will be at least seven (7) teams in attendance.

Jay Prepchuk QB Camp a Big Success!

Coach Prepchuk

The Jay Prepchuk QB Camp was very well attended by JB Football athletes this past Saturday.  Six JV and two varsity athletes "got better" in the classroom and out on the field.  Our coaching staff got a really good look at the players as well and we are quite happy with what we saw!  A quality performance on the field this year will find its roots in all the little things that we do to improve ourselves en-route to "making the play".  Saturday's event will pay off when it counts.

Next up for the program is 7 on 7 workouts.  Varsity will work-out Mondays and Wednesdays 3:16-4:31 and JV's will hit the field Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:16-4:31.  We will face the Whaler JV's on Fridays beginning on Good Friday.

On the horizon is the Football Spring Frenzy Development Camp (see previous post) April 17/18.    Looking forward to this superb event as it just can't come soon enough!  Another step in our quest to get better as individuals, teammates and as a program as a whole!

Go Dawgs!!

Garden Manure Sale 2010

Great Job John Barsby Football!  Another manure sale "in the bag" so-to-speak!  This year's sale was a super success and was a real tribute to teamwork greased with some good ol fashioned sweat!  A huge thanks to Ken Green trucking and all of the parents who helped with deliveries on the Saturday morning!

There is much to be said about "earning your way" and this year's JV/Varsity squads certainly worked very hard en-route to paying off a good chunk of this year's costs for uniforms and protective equipment.  As we often discuss, the harder it is that a fella works for something, the harder it is to surrender.

Well done Dawgs!

Next-up for us is the JV Combine, 7 on 7 passing, and the Football Frenzy development camp April 17/18.

-For planning purposes: Parents, players and coaches can count on this schedule to remain intact without change.-

Academics and Football: Barsby Football is a school sport. All players are expected to make a maximum personal effort towards their studies. It is understood that people have their respective strengths and weaknesses academically. It is also understood that we all have the equal opportunity to a) attend all of our classes and b) put forth our best effort in terms of conduct and production. With a 24 hour day in place, all players are required/expected to manage their time to include homework and football. Last second excuses that claim homework in lieu of football practice are the product of poor personal time management and will not be viewed kindly by the H. Coach. All players have the time and opportunity to schedule 2 hours of their day for ball and 2 hrs per-day for homework. We have produced several Academic All-Canadians at the University Level and several others in challenging engineering/academic programs at the University Level. It can be done! Players are reminded that irregarless of athleticism, they need a minimum 76% average, a language and 4 provincially examinable courses to attend the majority of Canadian Universities. Now is the time to plan to build this foundation.

JV Football Study Hall: We run a JV Football study hall year-round every Thursday after school in Mr. Austin’s classroom. This is a unique opportunity for each player and a huge support to his academics during the season.

**Of Note: 45% of our program roster grades 9-12 in 2009 achieved honor roll status!!**

A complete program orientation will be presented on registration night.
