Week 8

Week Eight News

JV's

Our JV's have a bye this week as Handsworth pulled the pin on their visit at the last second.  Though frustrating, we have decided to redouble our collective and individual efforts and get better this week!  Weight Room, Study Hall and a series of great practices will leave us better on Friday than we started on Monday.  This week is going to be a springboard for us into the November playoff run!

Varsity vs Windsor HS

Our Varsity squad will host the Windsor Dukes of North Vancouver on Friday at 1:46 PM "In The Cage".  We are looking forward to a great turnout and a fun afternoon of JB Football.

Strap On Your Head Gear!
Time To Get It On!!!
It's Border Battle Week baby and BC's biggest HS Football Rivalry is stacking up to be a classic! Our Varsity Dawgs (4-0) host The Ballenas Whalers (3-1) on our home dirt this coming Friday afternoon and its a big one for both squads as this game not only counts for pride, but has massive playoff implications right out of the gates. The Whalers are for real this year and it is going to take our best week of prep and a supreme effort on the field of play to take this one.

The call is going out now to every Dawg supporter, alumni, parent and the student body to get out to the field and Rock-The Cage! Rain or shine, this is going to be "A Happening" to remember! We need the 12th man on the field with us (our crowd) as we do gridiron battle with our arch-rival Ballenas!

Below is a video diary of the Whaler season to date. Look for yourselves folks! They are good!

Its for real folks and this one is for keeps!

JV Dawgs vs Nanaimo District Islanders

The Tenth Annual Ray Kocher Classic will be played this Wednesday, October 5th  3:01 PM "In The Cage!"  The game is called the Ray Kocher Classic as he was the Principal first at John Barsby and then at Nanaimo District who gave the go ahead for the start of High School Football at both schools.  Over the ensuing decade, hundreds and hundreds of young men have enjoyed and grown within the High School Football Experience.  Both programs are thriving and this game is a lot of fun.

Varsity Dawgs 48 Edward Milne 0

Big Day For Dawg D!

Dawg D Closes In For Another White-Out!

Defense was stellar again on Friday as we held a Milne team that had scored 60 plus points the week prior to zero on the scoreboard.  Big kudos however to the Wolverines who fought hard to the end and who were great sportsmen!  Without them, we never would have had a game.

The coaching staff was pleased with the total team effort across the roster and believes that we took another step forward towards building a better squad.  The pre-season is now over and we are really going to be getting down to business at practice and on the playing field.  There will be no free lunches and everyone is going to have to compete mentally and physically.  Preparation, preparation, preparation men.

Thanks again to the parents who helped with the sticks this week, Mr. Gray and JB Alumni Mr. Harry Parmar for their efforts on the PA and to Mr. Craig Letourneau for the game photos.

Week 3 Wrap-Up

Belmont Double Header Big For Barsby

JV's Make It 2-0

The day began with another outstanding breakfast served-up by Chef Chandler and his crew and things only got better from there.  Our JV's posted a 48-0 victory over their opponents recording our second consecutive shutout of the year.  It doesn't get much better defensively.  On offense, "Air Buldog" made an appearance with over 270 yards thrown above our lovely turf.  It was a fun game and it signals better things to come as the season unfolds.

Varsity Defense Ready To Unload

Our Varsity Dawgs played some great physical ball in a game shortened to the first half due to Dawg inflicted attrition on the opposing bench.  Hats off to Belmont for coming to play the game and they gave a good account of themselves while the game was on.  We had another very good defensive day giving up only a two point conversion. The defense also recorded four interceptions in the first half alone!  Belmont's lone score came off of a very well executed kick-return and we have to go to work to get better in that area!  Offensively, we spread the ball around well and the blocking was outstanding.

A big thank you to all the students, teachers, parents, admin, alumni and friends of the program who came out to cheer on our squads!  The Barsby Dance Team did a great job at both half-times!! A special thank you to Mr. Letourneau for his great game pics.  These can be viewed at:

Week Three Double Header vs Belmont HS

Dawgfight in The Cage 23 September!

The Belmont Blue Bulldogs roll into town for a week three double-header Friday, 23 September in "The Cage"!

Belmont is a huge school with a population that is over three times as big as ours.  The athletes that will step on to the field for the Blue Bulldogs will surely be a reflection of the draw the school has.  Do not underestimate what we will be facing on the field come Friday!

Kick-Off Times

11:01 AM Junior Varsity Kick-Off

1:46 PM Varsity Kick-Off

We will be wearing our dark uniforms for this game.

Week Two Big For The Dawgs

Week two was a road warrior week for our JV's and Varsity with 52-0 and 42-7 wins respectively.  Defense and some very good special teams "Pride and Joy" play characterized both games.  Our players travelled well and "delivered the mail" when they arrived at their destination.  This is good experience for the big games that loom on the mid-horizon.  For now, it is time to prepare for our week three double-header against the Belmont Blue Bulldogs of Langford.

JV's Show Much Promise In 2011 Spring Jamboree

JV's Light It Up At 2011 Jamboree!
JV Jamboree Photos at:
Wow!  Our JV's served notice that they are on a mission in 2011 this past Saturday.  We kicked-off game one in a wild melee vs AAA Champion Mt. Douglas and finished on top of a 38-28 tilt.  Game two vs arch-rival Ballenas was 28-6 Barsby and game three against AAA finalist Vancouver college wound up 30-6 for the Dawgs.

JV's "Get After It!" Spring 2011

The scores don't necessarily tell the whole story of the day however as coaches on both sides of the ball rotated players liberally.  The story of the day was team execution, mental cohesion, physicality and desire.  Much hard work has taken place since 4 December 2010 to prepare for the 2011 campaign.  Six months into the process and we demonstrated that we are well on track as individuals and a team.

Video analysis shows however, that there is much work to do to be where we want to be on both sides of the ball.  There will be some wound licking for a couple days and then it is back to work building something we can all be proud of!

Players, coaches, parents and supporters.  A great Spring!!  Time to hit the books and finish as strong as we can in the classroom.

Varsity Spring Jamboree Jamboree

The 2011 Season Begins Well

Congratulations to our Varsity Dawgs on a well played afternoon of Football!  The rivalry game with Ballenas is surely alive and well!!

The coaching staff was able to get  a very good look at a wide variety of players in different positions and combinations throughout the day.  It was a pleasure to see the teamwork between veteren players, new arrivals from JV and our group of brand new Barsby Football Players.  There is much potential in the 2011 group and a whole lot of work ahead required to narrow the gap between our current performance and where our potential performance exists.  Narrowing that gap is half the fun of playing the game!

2011 Garden Manure Sale

Our 2011 Garden Manure Sale was a big success by many a measure!  We had 100% player participation and even some volunteers from the student body who just wanted to pitch in and support!  We shovelled 10 dump truck loads of manure that translated into 3800 bags of product for sale!  To date we have sold all but 400 or so bags and are hoping to have them gone this coming weekend.  All proceeds from the sale are going towards uniforms and protective equipment for the fellas!

Another huge benefit of our sale is the fact that the players have a direct hand in providing the means for equipping themselves.  It is also a big team builder in the sense that everyone is working together for a common cause.  Parents and coaches also pitch in with shovelling, deliveries and getting the word out.  Our new VP came out and shovelled on Friday afternoon as well.  The sale this year has surely been another step towards being the best we can be as a program.  Well Done!!

The John Barsby Football Program will be conducting its annual Garden Manure Sale Saturday and Sunday March 12/13th at the top of the student parking lot located off of Bruce Avenue.  We will be open for business from 0800-1700 both days or until we are sold-out. We are selling top quality two year old cow manure for $5.00 per-40 lb bag.  Customers who pick-up their order will receive a free bag of manure for every four bags they purchase.

All proceeds from this important fundraiser will go towards the purchase of uniforms and protective equipment for our young people.

All players are required to participate in the shovelling, bagging, loading and deliveries that will take place Friday and Saturday.  We will begin shovelling Friday immediately after school and continue until we are complete or darkness sets in, whichever is first.  The Dawghouse will be open at 0800 on Friday for the storage of your weather appropriate clothing and clearly marked shovel.

2010 BC Championship Fan Busses

FAN BUSSES  FOR THE BIG GAMES ARE NOW READY TO GO!

How This Works

**All Adult Fans are responsible for travel to and from Departure Bay Ferry Terminal and the cost of their ferry ride to and from the game.  The cost of entry to the championships is $15.00 for adults and $10.00 for youth at the gate.

Adult Fan Busses

To get a seat on the Fan Bus MUST PRE-PAY AT THE SCHOOL OFFICE prior to 2:31 PM, Friday, December 3rd.  You are responsible for all other ferry and gate payments as they arrise.

The cost is $10.00 cash per-seat.  This fee is NON-REFUNDABLE.  Your name will then go on a list that reserves you your seat.  If you are paying for others, you must indicate their names at the time of payment.

EARLY FAN BUS (lets you see BOTH the JV 10:00 AM Game AND the Varsity 3:00 PM Game.

There will be an adult fan bus that will be waiting next to the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal at 0815 AM.  This means you must be on the 0630 AM Departure Bay Ferry.  You must walk off of the ferry and go directly to the bus.  A school representative will be on the bus with a manifest of PRE-PAID passengers.  You must present yourself and indicate who you are to board the bus.  If you are on the list, you will be allowed to board the bus.  If you are not on the list, you must make alternative arrangements to get to the stadium.

SECOND ADULT FAN BUS (lets you see the Varsity 3:00 PM Game.

There will be an adult fan bus that will be waiting next to the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal at 12:15 PM.  This means that you must be on the 1030 AM Departure Bay Ferry.

All Fan Busses will be waiting outside of the stadium at the conclusion of the Varsity Game which will be at approximately 5 PM.  Fans will board their respective busses at 5:20 PM.  Again, there will be a school representative with a passenger manifest that you have to check in with.  If you are not on the list, you must make alternative arrangements to get to the ferry terminal.  The bus will drop off passengers at the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal in time for the 7:00 PM sailing.

Again, adults will be responsible for their own ferry boarding fees and transportation after being dropped off at the Horseshoe Bay Ferry terminal.

*Bus rides are first-come, first served in terms of reserving your pre-paid seat.  It is important to book your seat as early as possible.

**This is a school event an appropriate behavior from all spectators is expected.

***If you have horns or drums, BRING THEM.  Our motto as John Barsby Football fans is to Cheer for our Team and Not Against the other team.  Be loud, have fun, wear red and always be appropriate!

****Stadium security will be checking all bags for items that are not appropriate for the event.  Be prepared for this.

*****Lastly, the fan section is covered.  It will be December weather however so bring warm clothing and or a blanket.

Student Fan Busses

BC Quarter-Final Week

John Barsby Football Newsletter
Quarter-Final Playoff Edition
British Columbia Quarter-Final Games
Junior Varsity

Our JV's will host the Robert Bateman Wolves of Abbottsford, BC on Wednesday 17 November at 2:01 PM in "The Canem Cage" on John Barsby Field.

Bateman is exceptionally fast, loaded with G. 10's and big up-front. We will have to prepare very, very well in practice Monday and Tuesday in order to be ready for this crew.

How you can help:
1) Attend the game if you can! The guys play their best in front of their parents and friends. The more folks out cheering, the better! Please network with friends and family to get a big crowd out to the game!

2) Field Set-Up: Coach Stevenson will be on the field at 5:06 AM Wednesday morning to set-up the field (Varsity practice is at 6:00 AM). Any help with field set-up would be greatly, greatly appreciated!

3) Stick Crew: Adult help is needed with the chains and down-box. If you can help with the sticks, please come by the field 15 minutes prior to kick-off and stand by them.

4) Field Take-Down: After each game it is a very big help when everyone pitches in to collect the field markers, signs, post-pads and properly store them in the bin.

Spectators: We need NOISE on game-day! We want to be classy as a crowd however so please use the maxim "Cheer Loudly For Your Team and not against the other team".

Varsity

Our Varsity will host the Pitt Meadows Marauders on Friday, 19 November at 1:01 PM on the brand new artificial turf field in Ladysmith, BC.

BCSSFA mandates that all varsity playoff games are played on artificial turf and this is the nearest location we can secure. The City of Ladysmith has really stepped up to get changerooms in place, bathrooms in place, parking arranged and bleachers for spectators.

Directions:

The field is located at the North End of 4th Avenue in Ladysmith. Directions to the game as follows: Headed South into town from Nanaimo on the Island Hwy. Turn right on to 1st Avenue and drive past Tim Hortons to the turnabout; Turn Right and drive up-the hill on Symonds Street until you reach 4th Avenue. Turn right on 4th avenue and drive north all the way to its end. You will see the field on your right hand side. http://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&tab=wl

Of Note: There are construction delays on the Island Hwy. near Cassidy. It is very wise to circumvent this by taking the Cedar Road turnoff and following Cedar Road to its junction with the Island Hwy. just past Cassidy airport. Will save you time.

The Game: Pitt is a very good football team with balanced running and passing and excellent special teams. On defense, these guys blitz a lot and are all about pressure! We surely have our work cut-out for us at Varsity in preparation for this game!
Help Needed

1) We need maximum attendance for the game! Please ask family and friends to come out as well as use your social networking sites to get word out! We want to be classy as a crowd however so pleas use the maxim "Cheer Loudly For Your Team and not against the other team". Our guys thrive on the home crowd and could use all the support they can get! Please wear red or black if you have such clothing.

2) Sticks and Down Box: We need adult crew that can make this game for the duration. The chain gang needs to be in place a minimum of 15 minutes prior to the game.

3) Field set-up: We are in the process of arranging a crew of volunteers to set the field up at 0900 on Friday Morning. Set-up will include all field markers/sticks/post-pads, game-day advertising/PA/Tent/ and scaffolding for video. Please contact Coach Stevenson Boomsha@yahoo.com if you can help. The more hands, the shorter the work. A huge effect of such volunteer help is the fact that it gives the coaching staff the opportunity to coach and prepare players to play the game!

4) Lastly, we need help taking the field down post game.

Folks, we can pull this off, but it is going to take the efforts of many people working together for it to happen. On behalf of the players who have worked so very hard to be playing in such meaningful games at this time of the season, I am most humbly and earnestly asking for your help. Now is the time for the power of program to bring forth its full measure!

Thank You and have a great week!
Coach R. Stevenson

Round 1 JV Playoff Game is Complete!

Congratulations JV Dawgs on your 60-0 round one playoff victory!  Well done and get ready to move on!  Now is the time to go to work fellas!  Our job is to narrow the gap between where we are currently playing and what our potential performance is.  Practice this morning at 6:00 AM saw 100% attendance in the cool November frost and by gosh, our effort and attitude were mighty encouraging!!  Our opponent next week is a winner and have earned their way into the BC Quarter-Final just as we have.  We have to find our best within ourselves for this match-up!

Kick-Off vs The Robert Bateman Wolves of Abbottsford is Wednesday, 17 November at 2:01 PM in "The Canem Cage"!

2010 Season Week 9

Week 8 Review

Varsity Comes-Up Big At Seaquam on Saturday

Our Varsity travelled to play Seaquam HS on Saturday and came away with a dramatic 24-22 win over a great Seahawk squad.  Well done Fellas!

JV's Versus Ballenas HS, Wednesday, 3 November at 3:01 PM

This is the final week of Regular Season Play.  Headed into our final games, our JV's are tied for first place with our arch-rival, the Ballenas Whalers of Parksville.  We play the Whalers on Wednesday with Kick-Off at 3:01 PM on our home field in The Canem Cage!  We are looking for a large and boisterous turnout for this game as the top seed coming off of the Island is at stake!

The Whaler File:

The Ballenas JV's throw the ball very well out of multiple formations and have an excellent draw-play.  On the ground, Ballenas loves to pound the ball behind their outstanding offensive tackle and tight end.  We can expect play-action pass off of just about every Whaler run play and of course, well developed screens.  Ballenas will have trick-plays by the bushell so our defense needs to expect the unexpected from start to finish.
Defensively, the Whalers are tough up front with a fast flowing crew of linebackers.  The defensive backfield is very disciplined and can play man and zone coverage equally well.  Whaler special teams will feature fake kick-offs and fake punts.  They run a good fake field goal as well.

Make no mistake, Ballenas is playing hard to win this one!  We have to be our best.

Varsity vs Sands HS Friday, November 5th, 1:46 PM

Our Varsity squad will host the Sands Scorpions of North Delta this coming Friday in The Canem Cage.  This game will represent the last game our Grade 12's will ever play on our home dirt.  It is a special day for these young men and we aim to bring our best on to the field to support them!!  Many of our 12's began playing flag football in grade 5/6 on our field and this is the closing act.  A special day, a bitter-sweet special day.

The Sands File:  Sands is HUGE and physical.  This team loves smashmouth football and is very good passing the football off of play-action.  The Scorpions have an arsenal of trick plays and use them well throughout the game.

Defensively, look for lots of Scorpion blitzes and a very good defensive line surge.  This game will be PHYSICAL right out of the gates!  Sands special teams are well coached and they will run a good reverse on their kick-return.  The Sands kicking game is good in terms of depth and they do a very good job covering punts and kick-offs.

Bottom-Line: Barsby beware...this team almost beat AAA champion Centennial earlier this year and is now healthy.  Sands is playing for a playoff spot on Friday.  They will be motivated to say the least!  We have to bring our A-Game!!

Parents: We need help with down-boxes and sticks as well as our field-take down post-game.  Please lend a hand if you can.

Varsity Dawgs at Seaquam HS

Always Tough and Prepared Seaquam Seahawks!

Our Varsity Football Squad travels this Saturday to play the ferocious and ever improving Seaquam Seahawks in a game that will determine first place in the Coast Conference and playoff seeding in November.  Much is on the line on Saturday!

The Seahawk File:  This is a group of football tough guys who go to work every day and get better.  The Seahawks have shown this in their play week-to-week during the 2010 season to-date.  Offensively, Seaquam gets it done in a variety of ways.  At heart they like to pound the ball forwards in the hands of their outstanding tailback with their QB and FB picking-up the slack when necessary.  Seaquam can also spread the field very well and their East-West Running game and ability to throw the football with a high percentage of completions vs throws being an admirable and dangerous trait.  Even more impressive is their ability to minimize turnovers.  On defense, Seaquam has been very opportunistic and has forced/recovered a very positive ration of turnovers.  On both sides of the ball, the Seahawks are big and strong with a good skill set.  Their Linebackers and DB's flow well to the ball and rarely surrender a big play over the top.  Special teams are disciplined and full of hustle.  In sum, Seaquam is going to be a very tough nut to crack!
