JV Dawgs Week 4

JV's Improve!

Congratulations to our JV squad on their 22-0 victory over AAA Lord Tweedsmuir of Surrey.  We came out of the gates physical and never looked back.  To go along with the play of the D, O, and Pride and Joy Units, there was a great pace set that carried us forward through the late quarters.  The coaching staff was very proud of how the offense responded to some late 2nd quarter adversity on Wed.  As well, the team travelled great and our behavior start-to-finish was superb.

A big thank you to Coach Biggen and his staff/program/school for their first rate hospitality.  We very much enjoyed the experience!

The remainder of this week for our JV's is as follows:

Thursday, 30 Sept: JV Study Hall 3:06 PM to 4:31 PM.  (Pizza arrives at 4:01 PM for those hard at work).

Friday, 0601-08001 hrs. AM Practice.  **No shows will not travel to play Timberline next Wednesday!

Friday: 1:46 PM Varsity Host South Delta Sundevils!  Come make some noise!!

Well Done Dawgs!!

Week 4 Varsity League Opener

The South Delta Sundevils Are Coming To Town!

An outstanding South Delta varsity squad will arrive Thursday night, rest-up and be on the field for our league opener at 1:46 PM, Friday, 1 October in The Canem Cage.  This game is huge, with playoff implications for both teams right out of the gates.

The Scout:

  • South Delta is big and physical up-front on both sides of the ball.
  • South Delta has a terrific passing game with well timed routes, superb receivers and the ability to read coverage and audible effectively.
  • Quarterback has a next level arm and touch on the ball!
  • South Delta runs multiple offensive formations looking for mismatches.
  • Run game is quick-hitting!
  • These guys love to run trick-plays and are very effective at doing so!!
  • Defensively, a very fast group to the ball!  Defensive Line is well coached and disciplined.
  • Special Teams: They are well coached and employ just about every trick in the book.  Swinging gate on PAT/Field Goal creates multiple threats to score!
Our Varsity Squad will have to play to our fullest potential in order to compete with South Delta.  They were banged up in their last game and now have their atletes back along with two solid weeks of preparation.  Expect anything and bring everything fellas!

WE NEED CROWD HELP!  Calling out to all alumni and Dawg Supporters, we thrive on the noise and feel like there is an extra player on the field with us when you start rocking The Cage!

Go Dawgs!!

2010 Ray Kocher Classic

Two games played this week vs our neighborhood rival Nanaimo District HS were lights out fun.  Our JV squad really found its stride turning in a solid performance en-route to a 35-22 victory on Thursday.  The game was very, very physical and NDSS asked for and gave no quarter throughout.  The coaching staff has been very impressed with the intensity and level of preparation from the whole team.  The players have done an excellent job of assisting and pushing one another to improve.  A job well done!

At the Varsity level we continued to roll with a 50-6 victory.  The competition has been getting stronger however and we were stopped on downs for the first time since play began at the spring Jamboree.  Another big effort by our defense led to five recovered fumbles!  Pride and Joy units were outstanding again.  Next up for our Varsity is our first league game Friday, October 1st, 1:45 PM versus the South Delta SunDevils.

Next-up for our JV squad is a renewal of our program's rivalry with the AAA Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers of Surrey this coming Wednesday.  A travel itinerary will be posted.

Both our JV and Varsity will be practicing on Monday, 27 Sept (Pro-D-Day)  from 3-5:30 PM.

Week Four: Divisional Play Begins!

A Message To Our Varsity

Guys,  high school football comes and goes so quickly and there are 13 weeks of ball in a season.  We are entering week four and the beginning of our divisional schedule.  You have prepared well for what is coming down the pipes!  From here on out, every game is for making the playoffs and then to move forward.  We set our dream goal in the heat of August; each week we have laboured to improve.  The process must continue.

Below is a video that defines the intensity we must bring to every practice and game from here on out.  Watch it daily.  When you are weary, watch it.  When you catch yourself feeling complacent, watch it.  When you need a push, watch it.  Soak it in, personalize your "Last Play" effort.  Bring your best.  The alternative is regret, the most expensive thing in the world.

Ray Kocher Classic Game Week!

The tenth annual Ray Kocher Classic Rivalry Game between the John Barsby and Nanaimo District H.S. Football programs is slated for this week. The game and trophy get their name in honor of Mr. Ray Kocher who was the principal of both schools at the time that they respectively started their programs. Mr. Kocher’s unwavering support and encouragement are the reason that hundreds upon hundreds of young men over the years have had the opportunity to compete on the gridiron and measure themselves against their peers from across the province.

The John Barsby Junior Varsity Squad will travel to NDSS Thursday afternoon for a 3:16 PM kick-off and Friday afternoon, the Varsity Dawgs host the Islanders in the Canem Cage at 1:46 PM. These games are always extremely hard fought regardless of either team’s win-loss record and it is a source of school pride throughout the year.

The Varsity edition of this year’s duo of games will feature the John Barsby Dance Squad performing at half-time for our home and visiting fans. Lots of hard-fought fun this week! In the spirit of the game and fraternity of the two football programs: Go Dawgs! Go Islanders! Lets Get It On!!

Week 2 Wrap-UP

In-Review

JV 32-Belmont 20

Hi-lite of the week: JV study hall!!  Twenty-six players attended study-hall on Thursday beginning at 3:06 and with the last player leaving shortly after 5 PM.  Four school staff members volunteered their help during this period with specialties represented from the Math, Science, English, Social Studies and Computer Science departments!  Wow!!  Those going the extra-mile were rewarded with some great tasting pizza at the end of the session!  How we study and how we play are two peas in a pod; well done JV Dawgs!!!

JV Pride and Joy!!

After a slow start at this Monday's practice, our JV worked hard to improve during subsequent sessions.  Friday's game at Belmont went a long ways towards telling us where we are at.  Defensively, we played physical and sharp producing a score en route.  Pride and Joy special teams units were outstanding and produced a touchdown.  Offensively, our recivers showed much improvement.  We will be going to work on offensive line and quarterback play come Monday!  Everything is fixable with a "lets get better" attitude.

Varsity 58- Belmont 0

Pride and Joy Baby!

We did some growing in practice this week and were ready to play right out of the gates.  Our team defense gave a savage account of themselves producing turnovers and many negative yardage plays for the opposing offense.  Offensively, we started on a very short field all day long and were very efficient in terms of getting the ball across the goal-line with six different ball carriers contributing to the final score.  The offensive line played superb and gashed big holes in the opposing unit.  Pride and Joy special teams units had a monster day and was an inspiration/joy to behold.  In a word, Devastation!

Game video shows areas requiring improvement, but this does not lessen the fact that we improved this week as individuals and more importantly, as a team.

All, enjoy the win and as of 0001 hrs. Sat. 18th, it is Ray Kocher Classic Game Week vs Nanaimo District.  Time to go to work and get better!!

Week 1 Complete!

A Super Day For The Varsity Dawgs!

Dawg fans were treated to a very complete, intense and elevated effort on Saturday vs the Okanagen Mission Huskies of Kelowna.  The defense forced three turnovers and accounted for five sacks en-route to a physical, dominating performance.

Pride and Joy Units played their part giving us terrific field position most of the game and the offense struck quick, hard and often.
"Chain-Saw"
Video analysis shows much to work on however as we continue to go through the process of getting better each day, week and month.  We are looking forward to a great week of practice ahead beginning Monday with a program defensive emphasis practice.

JV Dawgs 16 Mt. Douglas 39

No Quit in our DNA!

Our JV Squad opened up their season Wednesday versus the 2009 Provincial Champion Mt. Douglas Rams of Victoria.  While we fell short on the scoreboard, we surely did not fall short on the character, attitude and effort board!  The game was very, very physical both ways and the coaching staff was encouraged by what the players brought to the field!  Sometimes you have to take a loss like this and treat it like a friend, look in the mirror real good, learn from it, and drive on with the mission!  We are going to get a whole bunch better folks and there are big, big things ahead for the 2010 JV Bulldogs!!

It is back to work on Friday morning with the Dawghouse open at 6:00 AM and players on the field at 06:30.  Time to lick our wounds and get focused on Belmont!

A big shout-out to the awesome crowd at the game!!  Parents, classmates, varsity, alumni, teachers and of course, our Harewood neighbors/friends!!  Another packed house in the Canem Cage.

CTV News is pleased to announce that in September we will be introducing a new weekly sports segment. We call it High School Heroes, and it will celebrate school pride and the grassroots of football in our province.
Every Friday this fall, dozens of high schools from across B.C. will put their bragging rights on the line in a game of football. These intense battles on the gridiron not only unite the players in uniform, but they also bring together students, parents and fans in an ultimate show of school spirit.

High School Heroes will go beyond the players involved in the game. It will stretch into the hallways and classrooms of your school. A high school hero can be anyone, not just the star quarterback. It can be someone who has accomplished something great in the area of academics, a promising young musician or a student who gives back by volunteering.

Every Monday during the football season, the two teams involved in the upcoming High School Heroes Game of the Week will be announced live on CTV News at Six. Throughout the remainder of the week, CTV will be previewing the Friday night matchup with stories about the players and their schools.
The first High School Heroes Game of the Week will happen on Friday, Sept. 10. Sports Director Perry Solkowski will be live on location from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. counting down to kick-off with live interviews and feature stories.
Every Friday from Sept. 17 until the Championship finals in December, Solkowski or sportscaster Jason Pires will be reporting live from the Game of the Week school in the Lower Mainland or the Fraser Valley. You can also watch the Game of the Week highlights, features and all the scores on CTV News at 11:30. Weekly highlights, feature stories, a football insiders blog and photo galleries will also be available on the High School Heroes site.

We'll be offering fans the chance to get involved on a week-to-week basis with High School Heroes in three more ways:

MyNews: If you happen to capture an amazing touchdown pass, a bone-crunching hit or crazy fans we want you to send those pictures or videos to MyNews.

Facebook: You can show your school spirit by visiting the High School Heroes Facebook page, where you can upload pictures and videos and meet new friends.

Twitter: Help provide up-to-the-minute updates about the B.C. high school football games you attend by tweeting about it. Connect with us on Twitter using the hash-tag #highschoolheroes.

And finally, if you know a high school hero in your community, nominate them. Email us (highschoolheroes@ctv.ca) their story and they could end up being featured on High School Heroes.

DAWGS IN THE NEWS

Bulldogs' vicious bite sends Condors crashing

Walter Cordery, Daily News

Published: Tuesday, September 07, 2010

The John Barsby Bulldogs not only took a bite out of the Duchess Park Condors Saturday, they mauled the Prince George visitors 77-6 in front of about 200 fans surrounding the Canem Cage at John Barsby Secondary.
It was the opening game of the season for the Nanaimo team, ranked No. 6 in the British Columbia High School Football Association's list of AA teams.
The Dawgs defence, sparked by the inspiring performance of defensive tackle Zach Amstutz grounded the Condors aerial attack, forcing a number of turnovers. Amstutz was one of a number of Barsby players who played on both offence and defence.

Barsby didn't know what kind of game the team from PG would give them, as the Condors had a number of returning players on their roster. However, Barsby scored early and often taking a 58-6 lead into halftime.
That was not enough to comfort head coach Rob Stevenson.  He told his players at halftime that as far as he was concerned the second half was an entirely new ball game and "the score is 0-0."

Barsby QB Patrick Doyle avoided turnovers and was seen throwing a few blocks for massive running back Jordan Kuziek and others. Doyle also patrols the defence as a strong safety.  He connected on long throws for touchdowns to Nathan Berg and Tim Hampson but it was the Barsby offensive line that dominated the game, opening up gaping holes for any of the running backs Stevenson platooned into game. "I think our O-line is the strongest I've seen in at least 10 years," said Stevenson following the game. He was "pretty pleased" with the result. "For coming into this game after a full week of practices, I thought we played OK but not without a few mistakes, which we will get ironed out."

The varsity team's next opponent is the Okanagan Mission Huskies, who will be lining up against the Dawgs on Saturday at noon at John Barsby Secondary's newly christened Canem Cage.

The junior varsity Bulldogs drew hated rival and last year's No. 1-rated team Victoria's Mt. Douglas Rams as their first opponent of their season.  The kickoff for that encounter is set for 3 p.m. on Wednesday at Barsby.
