2010 BC Championship Fan Busses

FAN BUSSES  FOR THE BIG GAMES ARE NOW READY TO GO!

How This Works

**All Adult Fans are responsible for travel to and from Departure Bay Ferry Terminal and the cost of their ferry ride to and from the game.  The cost of entry to the championships is $15.00 for adults and $10.00 for youth at the gate.

Adult Fan Busses

BC Quarter-Final Week

Quarter-Final Playoff Edition
British Columbia Quarter-Final Games
Junior Varsity

Our JV's will host the Robert Bateman Wolves of Abbottsford, BC on Wednesday 17 November at 2:01 PM in "The Canem Cage" on John Barsby Field.

Bateman is exceptionally fast, loaded with G. 10's and big up-front. We will have to prepare very, very well in practice Monday and Tuesday in order to be ready for this crew.

How you can help:
1) Attend the game if you can! The guys play their best in front of their parents and friends. The more folks out cheering, the better! Please network with friends and family to get a big crowd out to the game!

2) Field Set-Up: Coach Stevenson will be on the field at 5:06 AM Wednesday morning to set-up the field (Varsity practice is at 6:00 AM). Any help with field set-up would be greatly, greatly appreciated!

3) Stick Crew: Adult help is needed with the chains and down-box. If you can help with the sticks, please come by the field 15 minutes prior to kick-off and stand by them.

4) Field Take-Down: After each game it is a very big help when everyone pitches in to collect the field markers, signs, post-pads and properly store them in the bin.

Spectators: We need NOISE on game-day! We want to be classy as a crowd however so please use the maxim "Cheer Loudly For Your Team and not against the other team".

Varsity

Our Varsity will host the Pitt Meadows Marauders on Friday, 19 November at 1:01 PM on the brand new artificial turf field in Ladysmith, BC.

BCSSFA mandates that all varsity playoff games are played on artificial turf and this is the nearest location we can secure. The City of Ladysmith has really stepped up to get changerooms in place, bathrooms in place, parking arranged and bleachers for spectators.

Directions:

The field is located at the North End of 4th Avenue in Ladysmith. Directions to the game as follows: Headed South into town from Nanaimo on the Island Hwy. Turn right on to 1st Avenue and drive past Tim Hortons to the turnabout; Turn Right and drive up-the hill on Symonds Street until you reach 4th Avenue. Turn right on 4th avenue and drive north all the way to its end. You will see the field on your right hand side. http://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&tab=wl

Of Note: There are construction delays on the Island Hwy. near Cassidy. It is very wise to circumvent this by taking the Cedar Road turnoff and following Cedar Road to its junction with the Island Hwy. just past Cassidy airport. Will save you time.

The Game: Pitt is a very good football team with balanced running and passing and excellent special teams. On defense, these guys blitz a lot and are all about pressure! We surely have our work cut-out for us at Varsity in preparation for this game!
Help Needed

1) We need maximum attendance for the game! Please ask family and friends to come out as well as use your social networking sites to get word out! We want to be classy as a crowd however so pleas use the maxim "Cheer Loudly For Your Team and not against the other team". Our guys thrive on the home crowd and could use all the support they can get! Please wear red or black if you have such clothing.

2) Sticks and Down Box: We need adult crew that can make this game for the duration. The chain gang needs to be in place a minimum of 15 minutes prior to the game.

3) Field set-up: We are in the process of arranging a crew of volunteers to set the field up at 0900 on Friday Morning. Set-up will include all field markers/sticks/post-pads, game-day advertising/PA/Tent/ and scaffolding for video. Please contact Coach Stevenson Boomsha@yahoo.com if you can help. The more hands, the shorter the work. A huge effect of such volunteer help is the fact that it gives the coaching staff the opportunity to coach and prepare players to play the game!

4) Lastly, we need help taking the field down post game.

Folks, we can pull this off, but it is going to take the efforts of many people working together for it to happen. On behalf of the players who have worked so very hard to be playing in such meaningful games at this time of the season, I am most humbly and earnestly asking for your help. Now is the time for the power of program to bring forth its full measure!

Thank You and have a great week!
Coach R. Stevenson

Round 1 JV Playoff Game is Complete!

Congratulations JV Dawgs on your 60-0 round one playoff victory!  Well done and get ready to move on!  Now is the time to go to work fellas!  Our job is to narrow the gap between where we are currently playing and what our potential performance is.  Practice this morning at 6:00 AM saw 100% attendance in the cool November frost and by gosh, our effort and attitude were mighty encouraging!!  Our opponent next week is a winner and have earned their way into the BC Quarter-Final just as we have.  We have to find our best within ourselves for this match-up!

Kick-Off vs The Robert Bateman Wolves of Abbottsford is Wednesday, 17 November at 2:01 PM in "The Canem Cage"!

2010 Season Week 9

Week 8 Review

Varsity Comes-Up Big At Seaquam on Saturday

Our Varsity travelled to play Seaquam HS on Saturday and came away with a dramatic 24-22 win over a great Seahawk squad.  Well done Fellas!

JV's Versus Ballenas HS, Wednesday, 3 November at 3:01 PM

This is the final week of Regular Season Play.  Headed into our final games, our JV's are tied for first place with our arch-rival, the Ballenas Whalers of Parksville.  We play the Whalers on Wednesday with Kick-Off at 3:01 PM on our home field in The Canem Cage!  We are looking for a large and boisterous turnout for this game as the top seed coming off of the Island is at stake!

The Whaler File:

The Ballenas JV's throw the ball very well out of multiple formations and have an excellent draw-play.  On the ground, Ballenas loves to pound the ball behind their outstanding offensive tackle and tight end.  We can expect play-action pass off of just about every Whaler run play and of course, well developed screens.  Ballenas will have trick-plays by the bushell so our defense needs to expect the unexpected from start to finish.
Defensively, the Whalers are tough up front with a fast flowing crew of linebackers.  The defensive backfield is very disciplined and can play man and zone coverage equally well.  Whaler special teams will feature fake kick-offs and fake punts.  They run a good fake field goal as well.

Make no mistake, Ballenas is playing hard to win this one!  We have to be our best.

Varsity vs Sands HS Friday, November 5th, 1:46 PM

Our Varsity squad will host the Sands Scorpions of North Delta this coming Friday in The Canem Cage.  This game will represent the last game our Grade 12's will ever play on our home dirt.  It is a special day for these young men and we aim to bring our best on to the field to support them!!  Many of our 12's began playing flag football in grade 5/6 on our field and this is the closing act.  A special day, a bitter-sweet special day.

The Sands File:  Sands is HUGE and physical.  This team loves smashmouth football and is very good passing the football off of play-action.  The Scorpions have an arsenal of trick plays and use them well throughout the game.

Defensively, look for lots of Scorpion blitzes and a very good defensive line surge.  This game will be PHYSICAL right out of the gates!  Sands special teams are well coached and they will run a good reverse on their kick-return.  The Sands kicking game is good in terms of depth and they do a very good job covering punts and kick-offs.

Bottom-Line: Barsby beware...this team almost beat AAA champion Centennial earlier this year and is now healthy.  Sands is playing for a playoff spot on Friday.  They will be motivated to say the least!  We have to bring our A-Game!!

Parents: We need help with down-boxes and sticks as well as our field-take down post-game.  Please lend a hand if you can.

Varsity Dawgs at Seaquam HS

Always Tough and Prepared Seaquam Seahawks!

Our Varsity Football Squad travels this Saturday to play the ferocious and ever improving Seaquam Seahawks in a game that will determine first place in the Coast Conference and playoff seeding in November.  Much is on the line on Saturday!

The Seahawk File:  This is a group of football tough guys who go to work every day and get better.  The Seahawks have shown this in their play week-to-week during the 2010 season to-date.  Offensively, Seaquam gets it done in a variety of ways.  At heart they like to pound the ball forwards in the hands of their outstanding tailback with their QB and FB picking-up the slack when necessary.  Seaquam can also spread the field very well and their East-West Running game and ability to throw the football with a high percentage of completions vs throws being an admirable and dangerous trait.  Even more impressive is their ability to minimize turnovers.  On defense, Seaquam has been very opportunistic and has forced/recovered a very positive ration of turnovers.  On both sides of the ball, the Seahawks are big and strong with a good skill set.  Their Linebackers and DB's flow well to the ball and rarely surrender a big play over the top.  Special teams are disciplined and full of hustle.  In sum, Seaquam is going to be a very tough nut to crack!

Week 7

Varsity 39 Hugh Boyd 0

Week 7 got off to a great start with the JV's bouncing back from a rough start vs Notre Dame and physically pounding their way to a 37-6 victory over the visiting AAA Jugglers.  The game was quite frankly inspirational.  Our JV's then went on to a record 37 players at JV study hall on Thursday after school!  Simply awesome!!

At the Varsity level in league play vs Hugh Boyd HS our defense played out of its skin for four quarters and offensively we put together a good two quarters en-route to a shutout day in "The Canem Cage".

There are far bigger and tougher games ahead and all players should take heed that "Good Enough" is not "Good Enough" and accepting repeated/preventable mistakes is a surefire way to let high aspirations slip away from one's grasp.

Upcoming Varsity Practices:

Monday 25 October: 0600-0800

JV Dawgs Improve To 4-0 In League Play

JV's On The Rise!

Congratulations JV Dawgs on your most complete team performance to date!  We got it done every which way on Wednesday en-route to a convincing 60-6 victory over the visiting Mark Isfeld Ice of Courtenay.  Our league record is now 4-0 and overall record is 5-1.

Next up for our JV Dawgs is the number 4 ranked AAA JV squad in the Province!  Notre Dame HS of Vancouver BC will be travelling over to play us on Wednesday, 20 October at 1:31 PM.  This will be an extremely physical game as Notre Dame likes to play old-school, tough-guy football which is just our cup of tea!  We are all extremely excited about the opportunity to challenge ourselves against the legendary Notre Dame program!

Upcoming JV practices/Study Hall:

Thursday, 14 October: Study Hall 3:06-onwards in Mr. Austin's Room.  We are going to break our attendance record today!!

Friday, 15 October: 0601-0801 AM.

2010 Border Battle

John Barsby Varsity 56 Ballenas 25

A fun, action packed afternoon up at Ballenas HS in Parksville.  The Whalers put on a great show and had their whole school out to the game!  Our opponents game planned well and came out giving their all and did not let up for four quarters.  We brought our best as well and what transpired was big play after big play on both sides of the ball for both teams.  The Whalers kept it close for three quarters but our relentless team effort was just too much for em.

Collectors Edition Border Battle T's For Sale!

*Note: T-Shirt on the left of above image is the one being sold.

2010 Border Battle!

Strap on your Headgear, fill-up the ice bags and get ready for some old school high school rivalry football!  The 2010 edition of Vancouver Island's biggest High School Football Rivalry Game is going to take place on Friday, October 8th at 2:01 PM on the Ballenas High School Field!

The host Whalers are 3-1 on the young season and are really hitting their offensive and defensive strides!  The Whalers dominated time of possession last week en-route to a 32-12 victory over the Hugh Boyd Trojans of Richmond.  Ballenas vicitimized Boyd with three on-side kick-off recoveries and an interception that all produced Whaler scores.  The Whaler defense was at its physical best dominating the line of scrimmage and allowing many gang tackles by their linebacker and defensive back corps.  Offensively, the Whalers scored by land and by air with a variety of formations, passes, direct and misdirection runs.  In short, they were comprehensive and they were good.

The Barsby Varsity squad is going to have to bring its game to a new level when we step on to Whaler grass come Friday!  There will be no room for mistakes and all should remember that previous stats and points are not worth a single yard, tackle or score in this game!  How we practice this week and how we prepare mentally will be the biggest indicator of success or defeat on Friday.  The Barsby coaching staff feels that this will be a real litmus test for the Varsity in terms of where we are and where we are headed.  Ballenas will give no quarter and we will ask for none.  Lets get better this week!

JV Dawgs Week 4

JV's Improve!

Congratulations to our JV squad on their 22-0 victory over AAA Lord Tweedsmuir of Surrey.  We came out of the gates physical and never looked back.  To go along with the play of the D, O, and Pride and Joy Units, there was a great pace set that carried us forward through the late quarters.  The coaching staff was very proud of how the offense responded to some late 2nd quarter adversity on Wed.  As well, the team travelled great and our behavior start-to-finish was superb.

A big thank you to Coach Biggen and his staff/program/school for their first rate hospitality.  We very much enjoyed the experience!

The remainder of this week for our JV's is as follows:

Week 4 Varsity League Opener

The South Delta Sundevils Are Coming To Town!

An outstanding South Delta varsity squad will arrive Thursday night, rest-up and be on the field for our league opener at 1:46 PM, Friday, 1 October in The Canem Cage.  This game is huge, with playoff implications for both teams right out of the gates.

The Scout:

  • South Delta is big and physical up-front on both sides of the ball.
  • South Delta has a terrific passing game with well timed routes, superb receivers and the ability to read coverage and audible effectively.
  • Quarterback has a next level arm and touch on the ball!
  • South Delta runs multiple offensive formations looking for mismatches.
  • Run game is quick-hitting!
  • These guys love to run trick-plays and are very effective at doing so!!
  • Defensively, a very fast group to the ball!  Defensive Line is well coached and disciplined.
  • Special Teams: They are well coached and employ just about every trick in the book.  Swinging gate on PAT/Field Goal creates multiple threats to score!
Our Varsity Squad will have to play to our fullest potential in order to compete with South Delta.  They were banged up in their last game and now have their atletes back along with two solid weeks of preparation.  Expect anything and bring everything fellas!

WE NEED CROWD HELP!  Calling out to all alumni and Dawg Supporters, we thrive on the noise and feel like there is an extra player on the field with us when you start rocking The Cage!

Go Dawgs!!

2010 Ray Kocher Classic

Two games played this week vs our neighborhood rival Nanaimo District HS were lights out fun.  Our JV squad really found its stride turning in a solid performance en-route to a 35-22 victory on Thursday.  The game was very, very physical and NDSS asked for and gave no quarter throughout.  The coaching staff has been very impressed with the intensity and level of preparation from the whole team.  The players have done an excellent job of assisting and pushing one another to improve.  A job well done!

At the Varsity level we continued to roll with a 50-6 victory.  The competition has been getting stronger however and we were stopped on downs for the first time since play began at the spring Jamboree.  Another big effort by our defense led to five recovered fumbles!  Pride and Joy units were outstanding again.  Next up for our Varsity is our first league game Friday, October 1st, 1:45 PM versus the South Delta SunDevils.

Next-up for our JV squad is a renewal of our program's rivalry with the AAA Lord Tweedsmuir Panthers of Surrey this coming Wednesday.  A travel itinerary will be posted.

Both our JV and Varsity will be practicing on Monday, 27 Sept (Pro-D-Day)  from 3-5:30 PM.

Week Four: Divisional Play Begins!

A Message To Our Varsity

Guys,  high school football comes and goes so quickly and there are 13 weeks of ball in a season.  We are entering week four and the beginning of our divisional schedule.  You have prepared well for what is coming down the pipes!  From here on out, every game is for making the playoffs and then to move forward.  We set our dream goal in the heat of August; each week we have laboured to improve.  The process must continue.

Below is a video that defines the intensity we must bring to every practice and game from here on out.  Watch it daily.  When you are weary, watch it.  When you catch yourself feeling complacent, watch it.  When you need a push, watch it.  Soak it in, personalize your "Last Play" effort.  Bring your best.  The alternative is regret, the most expensive thing in the world.

Last Play Dawgs!  Last Play!

Ray Kocher Classic Game Week!

The tenth annual Ray Kocher Classic Rivalry Game between the John Barsby and Nanaimo District H.S. Football programs is slated for this week. The game and trophy get their name in honor of Mr. Ray Kocher who was the principal of both schools at the time that they respectively started their programs. Mr. Kocher’s unwavering support and encouragement are the reason that hundreds upon hundreds of young men over the years have had the opportunity to compete on the gridiron and measure themselves against their peers from across the province.

The John Barsby Junior Varsity Squad will travel to NDSS Thursday afternoon for a 3:16 PM kick-off and Friday afternoon, the Varsity Dawgs host the Islanders in the Canem Cage at 1:46 PM. These games are always extremely hard fought regardless of either team’s win-loss record and it is a source of school pride throughout the year.

The Varsity edition of this year’s duo of games will feature the John Barsby Dance Squad performing at half-time for our home and visiting fans. Lots of hard-fought fun this week! In the spirit of the game and fraternity of the two football programs: Go Dawgs! Go Islanders! Lets Get It On!!

Week 2 Wrap-UP

In-Review

JV 32-Belmont 20

Hi-lite of the week: JV study hall!!  Twenty-six players attended study-hall on Thursday beginning at 3:06 and with the last player leaving shortly after 5 PM.  Four school staff members volunteered their help during this period with specialties represented from the Math, Science, English, Social Studies and Computer Science departments!  Wow!!  Those going the extra-mile were rewarded with some great tasting pizza at the end of the session!  How we study and how we play are two peas in a pod; well done JV Dawgs!!!

JV Pride and Joy!!

After a slow start at this Monday's practice, our JV worked hard to improve during subsequent sessions.  Friday's game at Belmont went a long ways towards telling us where we are at.  Defensively, we played physical and sharp producing a score en route.  Pride and Joy special teams units were outstanding and produced a touchdown.  Offensively, our recivers showed much improvement.  We will be going to work on offensive line and quarterback play come Monday!  Everything is fixable with a "lets get better" attitude.

Varsity 58- Belmont 0

Pride and Joy Baby!

We did some growing in practice this week and were ready to play right out of the gates.  Our team defense gave a savage account of themselves producing turnovers and many negative yardage plays for the opposing offense.  Offensively, we started on a very short field all day long and were very efficient in terms of getting the ball across the goal-line with six different ball carriers contributing to the final score.  The offensive line played superb and gashed big holes in the opposing unit.  Pride and Joy special teams units had a monster day and was an inspiration/joy to behold.  In a word, Devastation!

Game video shows areas requiring improvement, but this does not lessen the fact that we improved this week as individuals and more importantly, as a team.

All, enjoy the win and as of 0001 hrs. Sat. 18th, it is Ray Kocher Classic Game Week vs Nanaimo District.  Time to go to work and get better!!

Monday, September 13, 2010

Week 1 Complete!

A Super Day For The Varsity Dawgs!

Dawg fans were treated to a very complete, intense and elevated effort on Saturday vs the Okanagen Mission Huskies of Kelowna.  The defense forced three turnovers and accounted for five sacks en-route to a physical, dominating performance.

Pride and Joy Units played their part giving us terrific field position most of the game and the offense struck quick, hard and often.
"Chain-Saw"
Video analysis shows much to work on however as we continue to go through the process of getting better each day, week and month.  We are looking forward to a great week of practice ahead beginning Monday with a program defensive emphasis practice.

JV Dawgs 16 Mt. Douglas 39

No Quit in our DNA!

Our JV Squad opened up their season Wednesday versus the 2009 Provincial Champion Mt. Douglas Rams of Victoria.  While we fell short on the scoreboard, we surely did not fall short on the character, attitude and effort board!  The game was very, very physical both ways and the coaching staff was encouraged by what the players brought to the field!  Sometimes you have to take a loss like this and treat it like a friend, look in the mirror real good, learn from it, and drive on with the mission!  We are going to get a whole bunch better folks and there are big, big things ahead for the 2010 JV Bulldogs!!

It is back to work on Friday morning with the Dawghouse open at 6:00 AM and players on the field at 06:30.  Time to lick our wounds and get focused on Belmont!

A big shout-out to the awesome crowd at the game!!  Parents, classmates, varsity, alumni, teachers and of course, our Harewood neighbors/friends!!  Another packed house in the Canem Cage.

Go Dawgs!

CTV News is pleased to announce that in September we will be introducing a new weekly sports segment. We call it High School Heroes, and it will celebrate school pride and the grassroots of football in our province.
Every Friday this fall, dozens of high schools from across B.C. will put their bragging rights on the line in a game of football. These intense battles on the gridiron not only unite the players in uniform, but they also bring together students, parents and fans in an ultimate show of school spirit.

High School Heroes will go beyond the players involved in the game. It will stretch into the hallways and classrooms of your school. A high school hero can be anyone, not just the star quarterback. It can be someone who has accomplished something great in the area of academics, a promising young musician or a student who gives back by volunteering.

Every Monday during the football season, the two teams involved in the upcoming High School Heroes Game of the Week will be announced live on CTV News at Six. Throughout the remainder of the week, CTV will be previewing the Friday night matchup with stories about the players and their schools.

DAWGS IN THE NEWS

Bulldogs' vicious bite sends Condors crashing

Walter Cordery, Daily News

Published: Tuesday, September 07, 2010

The John Barsby Bulldogs not only took a bite out of the Duchess Park Condors Saturday, they mauled the Prince George visitors 77-6 in front of about 200 fans surrounding the Canem Cage at John Barsby Secondary.
It was the opening game of the season for the Nanaimo team, ranked No. 6 in the British Columbia High School Football Association's list of AA teams.
The Dawgs defence, sparked by the inspiring performance of defensive tackle Zach Amstutz grounded the Condors aerial attack, forcing a number of turnovers. Amstutz was one of a number of Barsby players who played on both offence and defence.

Barsby didn't know what kind of game the team from PG would give them, as the Condors had a number of returning players on their roster. However, Barsby scored early and often taking a 58-6 lead into halftime.
That was not enough to comfort head coach Rob Stevenson.  He told his players at halftime that as far as he was concerned the second half was an entirely new ball game and "the score is 0-0."

Barsby QB Patrick Doyle avoided turnovers and was seen throwing a few blocks for massive running back Jordan Kuziek and others. Doyle also patrols the defence as a strong safety.  He connected on long throws for touchdowns to Nathan Berg and Tim Hampson but it was the Barsby offensive line that dominated the game, opening up gaping holes for any of the running backs Stevenson platooned into game. "I think our O-line is the strongest I've seen in at least 10 years," said Stevenson following the game. He was "pretty pleased" with the result. "For coming into this game after a full week of practices, I thought we played OK but not without a few mistakes, which we will get ironed out."

The varsity team's next opponent is the Okanagan Mission Huskies, who will be lining up against the Dawgs on Saturday at noon at John Barsby Secondary's newly christened Canem Cage.

The junior varsity Bulldogs drew hated rival and last year's No. 1-rated team Victoria's Mt. Douglas Rams as their first opponent of their season.  The kickoff for that encounter is set for 3 p.m. on Wednesday at Barsby.

Varsity Game Week!

The opening game of our 2010 Varsity Football Season takes place this Saturday, 10 AM in the Canem Cage versus the Dutchess Park Condors of Prince George, BC!  We are looking for a great turnout for the game and are excited about the opportunity to get the season started at home in front of our family and friends!

We are looking for volunteer help with the sticks, scoreboard, PA and video.  Please contact Coach Stevenson ASAP if you can provide an assist.

Scout:  Information regarding the Condors is very limited.  What we do know is that they return a lot of players from their 2009 squad, they are big up-front and they like to throw the football a lot from a spread type offensive scheme.  The visitors will be wearing their black and gold uniforms and JB will be decked out in our Whites.

Weather:  The long-term forcast has game day as being sunny with temperatures peaking at 22 c.

Four practices this week to get game ready!  Each practice has to be gold!!

Go Dawgs!!!
